This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe. David has taken over the task of making these cookies and he does it well. One time Helen tried, but she put baking powder instead of soda in them. David was quite scornful, concluding that only HE could do it correctly. They turned out differently, but were eaten nonetheless, even by David.

- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- 2 cups pecans, chopped (optional)
